Abstract

Mobile GIS is one of the systems uses wireless technologies for improving the process of spatial data acquisition and management in a wide range of geographic arena. It provides the possibility of the data acquisition in a short time with an acceptable precision for producing medium scale maps. Road network is a kind of spatial data that according to its principal role in national and regional plans needs a periodical updating. Because of the wideness of roads all over the countries, updating process needs high amount of costs and efforts. In this paper a mobile GIS has been used to accelerate as well as facilitate road network updating in Iran northwest region. This process increases the data acquisition speed and simultaneously produces the shp format maps and reduces the amount of the office process cost and time. So, road network data has been prepared based on the designed and implemented mobile GIS and then updated map has been adjusted and generated. Implementation of a mobile GIS in updating of northwest roads showed that human errors and official data process steps decreased while the ability of control and error tracing has been provided.
