Abstract

Road surfaces always require having a certain degree of skid resistance for a variety of vehicles; so that drivers can safely perform braking and sudden necessary maneuvers. If there is not enough skid resistance in different places on the roads, vehicles control can be diminished and ultimately lead to accidents. As the skid resistance of a road surface decreases, the accident rate increases. More than one-third of the accidents occur on the wet roads in the world, resulting in very high fatal and injury accidents each year. Iran is among the top 10 countries in terms of number of accident in the world; therefore, identifying efficient and cost effective policies to measure the network skid resistance in Iran is very important. At present, different methods and devices have been used in different countries to measure skid resistance in various highway networks. However, there is no unique standard method to measure skid resistance in the countries of the world. So far, this issue has not been addressed in Iran. In this paper, in order to measure the network skid resistance of Iran’s road networks, different methods and tools has been investigated and, as a result, policies and appropriate methods for Iranian road networks have been suggested.
