Abstract

The intersection are of the most important elements are the urban transportation network. Selecting a proper type of intersection helps to reduce travel time, reduce fuel consumption and increases traffic safety. Saturated level crossing intersections will first organized by providing simple solutions and common practices are not adequate organization and if these solutions are not adequate, multi-level intersections will be an alternative. As Single-point urban intersections (SPUI) occupy less space than other Interchanges they are proper alternatives for high traffic intersections. Jug handle intersections are also proper and cost-effective options to organize initial intersections. This paper aims to study the performance of level crossing jug handle and SPUI intersection. To do so, a level crossing signalized intersection is selected in Isfahan and after collecting the traffic data, intersection is simulated in the Aimsun software and in the next step a jug handle and SPUI intersection are designed and simulated. The results show that the Jug handle and SPUI intersections reduce the time delay by 40% and 80%. The Jughandle intersections are safe, cost-effective alternative to organize the saturated intersections.
