Abstract

Population growth and increasing the number of vehicles have caused traffic problems in many cities. Choosing the best phases, optimal cycle time and split can improve traffic conditions at the signalized intersections. But for achieving the best traffic conditions, the mutual impact of the intersections on each other’s should be examined and by coordinating the network control systems, many traffic problems such as travel times, delays, the number of stops, the number of crashes at intersections, air pollution and fuel consumption will be reduced. In this research, Synchro Coordinatability Factor (CF) and Coupling Index (CI) were proposed after carrying out a literature review to assessing coordinatability for intersections as the main goal. Then, three intersections in Shiraz city were simulated using Synchro software, and CF were calculated for these intersections and the results were compared with CI. The results showed that the coordination of the Revolutionary street and the Zolwanvar street intersection (1009) and the Manouchehri street and the Revolutionary street intersection (1008) based on CF definitely recommended (89) and based on CI is favorable (18.4). Therefore, the coordination of these intersections was proposed. Also, the coordination of the Manouchehri street and the Revolutionary street intersection (1007) and the Manouchehri street and the Revolutionary street intersection (1008) based on CF probably recommended (53) and based on CI is favorable (2.73). Thus, the coordination of these intersections can be desirable. The method of this paper can be used in other studies to check the coordinatability of traffic lights.
