Abstract
Safety is one of the critical parameters considered as a fundamental principle in
traffic engineering. Hence, it is possible to improve the safety of this group of
drivers by the examination and prioritization of factors influencing heavy vehicle accidents. This study aimed to identify and prioritize factors affecting heavy traffic accidents.
The study used a descriptive-applied method based on field studies.
Aquestionnaire was designed based on the AHP method to collect and estimate the weight of criteria and sub-criteria of factors affecting heavy vehicle accidents.
Based on the findings of this study, four important criteria (failure to pay attention
ahead, failure to observe the right of way, deviation to the left, and inability to control the vehicle) and 14 sub-criteria (compliance with rules and regulations, eating and drinking, insufficient education, consumption of alcohol, psychedelics, and drugs, safe speed violation, road factors, unreasonable load (in terms of volume, weight, and dimensions), driving without drivers’ license, and vehicle technical defect) were identified. Failure to pay attention ahead was the most significant criterion in road accidents of heavy vehicles, followed by inability to control the vehicle, deviation to the left, and the right of way. Given that failure to pay attention ahead was the most important effective criterion. On heavy vehicle road accidents, it is possible to improve the safety of this group of users through legislation aimed at eliminating the shortcomings affecting this factor.
