Abstract

Geogrid is one of the geosynthetic products that is used as a separator between different layers of base and sub-base. In the past decade shear strength of geogrid-soil interface has received attention from different researchers. Strength of interface has several parameters and in this article some of them have been investigate by direct shear tests. The  value was defined to evaluate the effect of geogrid on the shear strength of the soil which is the ratio of geogrid-soil shear strength to internal shear strength of soil. The test results show that: 1. the soil-geogrid interface has significantly lower shear strength than the soil strength. 2. geogrid has a reduction effect on the shear strength of reinforced sand and this reduction will be more with the increasing of the degree of compaction. and 3. Larger geogrid apertures create a proper space for interlocking of soil particles to penetrate through geogrid apertures and therefore increase the shear strength of the reinforced soil.
